President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau calls on the people of Fiji to support the Vodafone Fiji 7s and the Telecom Fijiana teams this weekend.

The teams will play in the Oceania Sevens Championship at the Noosa International 7s on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Next week, the Ben Ryan-coached Vodafone 7s team kick-start their 2014/2015 HSBC IRB World Seven Series in Gold Coast, Australia.

“We simply have to support the players and the coaches Iliesa Tanivula and Ben Ryan,” he said.

Ratu Epeli is impressed with the recent performance of the Fijiana team who have qualified to take part for the first time in the 2014-15 IRB Women Seven World Series.

“This is a good thing for women’s rugby in the country,”he said.

“Our women have proved themselves and the least we can do is support them.

“Both Iliesa and Ben are great coaches so they need our support.”

Naqaliva ready for debut

New Vodafone Fiji 7s rep Apisai Naqaliva is looking forward to make his mark at the 2014/15 HSVC Sevens World Series in Gold Coast, Australia next week.

The Botenaulu, Wainimala, Naitasiri native recently returned from Sri Lanka and has impressed Vodafone Fiji 7s Ben Ryan with his physicality, off-loading skills and fitness.

The 24-year-old is the third child of five siblings and has maternal links in Nasiriti, Wainimala in Naitasiri.

“I never gave up; I kept on trying to be one of the best players,”he said.

A rugby product of John Wesley College, he played for Naitasiri in 2011, Police in 2012 and also featured for the Suva provincial side last year.

“This is the moment that I have been waiting for, to don the national jumper.

“I’m ready for the challenge and my aim is to make Fiji proud,” the Naitasiri lad said.

Samurai on track in Kenya

Meanwhile, the Sailosi Naiteqe-coached Samurai International team will play Argentina in the Cup semifinal of the Safaricom Sevens tournament at the Kasarani Stadium in Kenya today.

The team defeated Australian Iconz 33-5 in the quarterfinal while Argentina thrashed Fiji-born  Rocky Khan’s Auckland Metro 52-5. In the pool games Samurai defeated Simba Saba 25-17, Golden Lions 31-24 and Spain 31-0.
