Newly-appointed Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Sofia Akbar will work with non-governmental organisations (NGO) as part of the networking to  reach and help many Fijian women’s groups.

Ms Akbar said this during the FemLINK PACIFIC workshop in Suva last Friday.

“Our new partnership with FemLINK PACIFIC is the way forward to advance gender equality and women empowerment in Fiji,” Mrs Akbar said.

She said the partnership would achieve gender equality, economic empowerment of rural women and elimination of violence against women and children.

“My predecessor, Dr Jiko Luveni, has done a marvelous work for the last eight years and I look forward to continue her legacy for the betterment for our society.”

Ms Akbar said when women moved forward, so did the society.

“We will strengthen networking with NGOs that aspire to promote the social, economic and political empowerment of women in Fiji.”

She said she would work with organisations like FemLINK PACIFIC.

Executive director of FemLINK PACIFIC Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls said, “We take this opportunity to congratulate you and we look forward to collaborative partnership with your ministry particularly in advancing women’s human rights and mainstreaming gender equality commitments across Government ministries and departments.”

She said the meeting had brought their rural community media network together.
