A 71-year-old man is still coming to terms with the death of his six-year-old grandson who drowned in the Wainibuka River in Tailevu last Saturday.

“He was such nice kid; he always listens to what I say. I miss him dearly,” grandfather Usaia Naitini said.

Sailasa Koroitamana, a kindergarten student of Nailega District School, was swimming with a 29-year-old cousin at about 5pm when the alleged incident occurred.

Mr Naitini of Nailega Village, the maternal grandfather of the deceased, said he was still in shock over the incident.

“He came to spend the day at home with me on Wednesday. His father had come around in the afternoon to take him, but the child said he didn’t want to go home but I spoke to him and told him to go,” Mr Naitini said.

He said he never knew that would be the last time he would see his grandson.

“I was at home when I heard about the news. I ran to the road and saw people trying to resuscitate him. He was later taken to Nayavu Health Centre but was pronounced dead,” Mr Naitini said.

He said he would always miss his grandson’s bubbly nature.

“He was such nice kid; he always listens to what I say. I miss him dearly,” Mr Naitini said.

Parents of the deceased refrained from making any comment.

Meanwhile, it is alleged the 29-year-old cousin was washing clothes on the river bank and later noticed that the child, who had been playing in the shallow end of the water had gone missing.

Police reports state that all attempts to revive the victim were unsuccessful.

A post mortem would be conducted as investigations continue. The drowning toll now stands at 33 compared to 32 for the same period last year.
