Government is calling on Fijians to use water wisely as the dry spell continues across the country.

The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management is working with village headmen in promoting the need to use water wisely under the current weather.

The ministry’s deputy secretary of the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Setareki Tale visited communities currently affected by the prolonged dry spell in Naitasiri and Tailevu on Saturday.

Mr Tale visited Dawasamu and Namara in Tailevu and Baulevu and Lomaivuna in Naitasiri.

He reassured communities that Government was committed in addressing the issue and was looking at other alternatives on how best to tackle the issue.

He reiterated the importance of working together in areas of water conservation and water management.

“We are working very closely with the Roko Tui and the turaga ni koro to promote the important of water conservation. This is important if this dry weather continues,” Mr Tale said.

Divisional planning officer Central Sakiusa Ravatu said 712,000 litres of water had been distributed to 48 villages in Naitasiri and Tailevu.

“Our focus is on areas which are worst affected. We will continue to monitor the situation and respond to request for water when they come,” Mr Ravatu said.

At Matamaivere Village in Namara, Tailevu, the village headman, Emosi Waqairavoko thanked Government for its timely assistance.

“The only water source we have is from a well. Water delivered to the village has been stored for drinking and cooking. This is to ensure that there is water to cater for the 47 households in the village,” Mr Waqairavoko said.
