The Veilomani Boys Home in Ba which is one of the nine residential homes for underprivileged children have experienced an increase in number of occupants, says Reverend Sarwesh Kumar Singh.

He is the superintendent of the Home in Ba and the principal for Veilomani Rehabilitation and Vocational College.

“This is my sixth year looking after the home and currently there are 20 children here,” Mr Singh said.

He said there had been an increase over the years in the number of boys that were given care at Veilomani Boys Home.

“For couple of years we used to have minimum number of 12, but now it can go up tol 25 with their ages age ranging between five to 18 years old.”

Mr Singh said some of the boys did not have proper families and some were neglected by their families. They were referred to the home by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women, and Poverty Alleviation which is now called the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.

“Currently six of the boys are taking courses in carpentry, joinery, automotive engineering and agriculture while others are in primary and secondary schools.”

For some of the boys, he said, this was their only home and they ensured that they were given the care they needed to complete their education and were reintegrated with their families while some were adopted as well.

“The Ministry provides $100 monthly allowances per child and this year the Ministry also provided the Veilomani Boys Home with a grant of $20,000 that has been a great help is renovating the place.”

Mr Singh said the Home could accommodate 25 boys and they were provided with three meals, proper clothing’s, health care, educational programmes and everything that a child needed to develop.
