Fiji Association of the Deaf marked World Deaf Day last Friday. The association is a self-help group run by the deaf for the deaf. It was formed in 2002
World Deaf Day is celebrated globally in the month of September.
Association president Leona Tamainai hopes they will receive more help.
“We are hoping that the deaf community will develop in sign language, in culture and activities and advocacy is needed at local, district and Government level,” Mrs Tamainai said.
The association aims to provide people who are deaf with opportunities to live as an equal member of society, to gain independence and the ability to advocate for their own need.
