The Ministry of Fisheries and Forests is expected to promote participation in the sector by all stakeholders over the next four years.

New minister, Osea Naiqamu, made this clear when addressing staff at a preliminary briefing yesterday. This was part of a welcome programme for him at the ministry’s headquarters in Suva.

“The next four years, as I have mentioned to them this morning, is to promote the productivity and the efficiency within the ministry and to enforce quality and performance each and everyone that participates within the ministry. I’m really convinced by the level of support,” Mr Naiqamu said.

This, he said, was vital because fisheries and forestry provided daily livelihoods for many Fijians.

“Our future plan is one that can enhance the true participation of all the major stakeholders in the industry. After listening to my senior staff, I am truly convinced there is a way forward that can bring a true potential for both ministries, the fisheries sector and the forestry sector.

“And as you know, we need to uplift the standard of living and this is the ministry that will ensure to receive the maximum benefits,” he said.

Mr Naiqamu was also briefed by senior officials of his ministry on the various projects within the ministry.

“Well I’ve been fortunate this morning; I’ve been briefed by my senior staff in the ministry but I think I miss a basic amount of level of work that have been carried out by the ministry both fisheries and forest.

“But as a minister I thank the ministry staff for putting an effort that will help the ministry to uplift especially to deliver what’s needed by the ministry for all the major stakeholders,” Mr Naiqamu said.
