Two persons charged in relation to the Sereima Berwick case appeared at the Nausori Magistrates Court yesterday.

Eparama Saint John and Ravuama Tawake have been charged with one count each of perjury and fabrication of evidence appeared.

While the files were called separately, the court had ordered the cases to be consolidated.

The matter has been adjourned to October 24 for consolidation of the charges and their bail has been extended accordingly.

The Director of Public Prosecution, Christopher Pryde, in June had ruled the death of Sereima Berwick in Nabouciwa Village in 2007 as a “tragic case of suicide.”

The DPP however had pursued the evidence that certain people may have conspired to pervert the course of justice and fabricate evidence.

Sereima’s body was found hanging from a tree beside her home in Nabouciwa Village in Tailevu in 2007.

However, the case was reopened in December last year following an inquest by Nausori Magistrate Charles Ratakele which had ruled that Berwick was murdered and did not commit suicide.

Magistrate Ratakele had said the post-mortem reports indicated foul play was involved.

Four men from the village were linked to the murder after an alleged witness came forward last year, alleging that he saw the 13-year-old being raped and drowned before she was hung from the tree.
