The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Mereseini Vuniwaqa said her first priority in office was to look at all the processes within the ministry.

“We are going to address the processes within to make it more customer-friendlier,” Mrs Vuniwaqa said.

“Behind this we will be looking at other policy issues, one, we would be looking at certain provisions maybe of the Crown land Act but I cannot confirm at this particular time however, we will look at it in a holistic picture to make sure that the processes are backed up with laws, the ultimate aim is that to make it more effective in management of crown lands and making it more conducive to sustainable development.”

She said she would also be looking at the ministry’s organisation structure.

This, Mrs Vuniwaqa said, was to see that it supported the plans that government wanted to implement in this area.

“That will come as I go along looking at the organisation structure of the ministry will also be one area I will be looking at to make sure that it supports the reforms that government needs to do in this area.”

However, she said her most immediate plan in the next three months would be to ensure that the public would see changes in the service delivery of the ministry.

“I want members of the public to be able to see some changes in the delivery of service between the members of the public and the ministry and I have mastered three months for that.

“Like any minister going into any ministry the expectation is one of the need for support from the staff that are already there. Obviously they have the necessary expertise to move this reform initiative forward and it goes down to getting the necessary support,” she said.

Mrs Vuniwaqa attended the parliamentarians induction programme at the Holiday Inn in Suva yesterday.
