Drivers delivering harvested sugarcane to the Fiji Sugar Corporation mill in Labasa are frustrated with what they say are weekly breakdowns.

They said the breakdowns were taking a huge toll on the sugar cane farms and farmers, on top of the damage caused by the prolonged dry spell.

FSC chairman Abdul Khan said there were no unusual mill stoppages and unfortunately, a good percentage had been due to the inability of having a sufficient supply of sugarcane for processing.

“We will have a good look at this problem and will work with the farmers to ensure a much better supply next season,” Mr Khan said.

Seaqaqa farmer Niranjan Deo said the mill operation was shocking because it seemed to break down for two days and then function normally on the third day.

“The mill breaks down on Monday to Wednesday and then operates on Thursday,” Mr Deo said.

“It is questionable how the mill stops after three days and mill crushing takes place the following day. This is costing us a lot of money and farmers are the most affected.

“Farmers want to harvest cane as soon as possible because the drought is drying up cane in the fields.”

On Monday a group of lorry drivers were seen sitting outside the mill counting down the hours they have spent waiting.

“We have been waiting here since morning and now it’s nearly dark again,” lorry driver Mahen Prasad said.

“We are very frustrated with the frequent mill breakdowns. We have to spend hours outside the mill and this will be another night that we will have to spend time away from home.”
