T

he Fiji men’s volleyball team has started preparations for next year’s Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.

The national squad is made up of players from Suva and the Western Division.

Fiji volleyball coach Kenny Lidise said the problem they face now is bonding of players.

“The challenge for us is team bonding and combination,” Lidise said.

“The west players come down on Saturdays to train with the rest of the team and they really look forward to it.”

Lidise said come July next year, they would want to field a strong team for the Pacific Games.

This is because of games against Wallis and Futuna, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and Tahiti.

“July is not too far off but we feel that we still have time to train and we want to field a strong team.

“We are trying hard because we know that we are up against strong volleyball nations. We really have to work hard if we want to compete with them, so like I said we have a couple of months to get our act together.

“We’ve some fairly new boys in our team.

The other nations have the upper hand because they have been playing together in representing their country.

Wallis and Futuna have been together for more than eight years and that will give them edge.

“But saying that we need to work well together, get our systems, formations right and on our mental toughness.”

Next month, Lidise said they would either reduce the team or announce the final squad depending on how well the players stick to the selection criteria.

Lidise is keeping his fingers crossed that they get some game time from teams taking part in the Pacific Games.

“Apart from training they need some exposure as well and part of our plan is to train and compete.

“We’re also keeping our fingers crossed that one of the regional teams like PNG come down and have some game time with our boys in preparation for the Pacific Games.

“We need to have a taste of top level competition before we go to the Pacific Games.” he said.

Lidise has also pointed out the need for sponsors to help the team in preparations.

“It will be good to have some sponsors, to help the team along in preparing for next year.

“Help from businesses will be greatly appreciated,” he said.
