Roneel Ram was all smiles after the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, praised him for his hard work.

Mr Ram was sticking labels on ice cream containers a job contracted by Tuckers Ice Cream (Fiji) Ltd.

“I feel happy that the minister paid a visit to us,” Mr Ram said.

Mrs Akbar was at the Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons headquarters yesterday. She said it was a pleasure to meet the members of the council and it was not an easy task to get one to be self-reliant.

“The effort of the ministry to establish the means of self-reliance of the recipients is a mandate that we will work towards,” Mrs Akbar said.

She said it needed persuasive and replenished initiatives that could strengthen the basis of enabling an individual to improve their own standard of living.

“An individual has their own strengths and weaknesses and we must take these into consideration because we are unable to know their capabilities unless certain initiatives of up -skilling are provided for them.”

As a path towards economic development, Mrs Akbar said it was a must that they championed the rights of persons living with disabilities.

“Having equal access to opportunities by the persons living with disabilities is an area that we must focus on.”

She said they should overcome the mentality of unequal access to resources.

“As we have witnessed, the Government of the day has the Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports, Iliesa Delana, who has raised the bar and changed impossibility to possibility.”
