A 16-year-old student has been charged  over the death of a Year 11 student following a motor vehicle accident in Taveuni last week.

The victim was airlifted to the Labasa Hospital for further medical treatment following the accident but he died.

He was a passenger in the vehicle that was driven by the 16-year-old at the time of the accident at Naselesele.

It is alleged the accused lost control of the vehicle while trying to overtake another vehicle along the North Coastal Road. The suspect and another 15-year-old passenger suffered injuries.

The accused has been charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving and one count of driving a motor vehicle without being the holder of valid driver’s licence.

Police said the accused is expected to be presented at the Labasa Magistrates Court today.
