Mr Koroilavesau has yet to be officially appointed to the role, which is expected when Parliament sits.  He previously worked as a captain and managing director with Captain Cook Cruises and prior to that with the Fiji Navy.

Traditionally, the whip is an official in a political party whose primary purpose is to ensure party discipline  in a legislature.

This involves ensuring the attendance of party members at crucial voting sessions, moving procedural motions in the House, and allocates priority and times for speakers from their party during debates.

Whips, according to Wikipedia, are also the party’s “enforcers,”

An Opposition Whip is also expected to be appointed. A senior official from the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) said this would probably be done next week.

The Opposition is also expected to name a Shadow cabinet to keep the Government in check.
