The Fiji Red Cross Society has been trying to alleviate the effects of the drought by providing clean water to people in parts of Naitasiri.

FRCS resource development manager Dianne Reddy said their teams had been based at Lomaivuna since September 30.

The Lomaivuna cluster has a population of 3426.

“The team comprises of a logistics support officer who will be operating the NOMAD unit and two volunteers from our Suva branch volunteers. We will be assisting the affected areas until October 10,” Ms Reddy said.

So far they had distributed 55,000 litres of clean water to affected areas. The FRCS was assisted by the Water Authority of Fiji and the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO).

NDMO director Manasa Tagicakibau has urged people needing assistance to be more proactive. Mr Tagicakibau said in some places villagers had not prepared containers to fill up water.

“There were places that we’ve visited early in the morning and don’t find anyone waiting for our teams. Our employees are humans too, sacrificing their time to travel to interior places to provide help, let’s all work together,” Mr Tagicakibau said.
