Disability Not A Barrier: Delana

Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Iliesa Delana is keen to promote that disability is not an issue when it comes to sports.

He made the comment at a cocktail last night hosted by the Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation (FDPF) and its affiliated oragnisations.

Delana said he would get to work on making sure that persons with diability understand that when it comes to sport disability is not a barrier.

“Sports are what bring people together and it should be equal across the board including people with disabilities,” Delana said.

“People have recognised me not because of my diability but what I have achieved at the 2012 London Olympics.

“This should be hope for people with disabilities that, even though they are disabled they can still do anything a person who is able can do.”

The FDPF has urged the government to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which was signed on June 2, 2010, which focuses on equal rights of diabled persons.

“Creating equality in sports with regards to disabled persons is something we need to look towards and the Ministry of Youth and Sports can also work together with Social Welfare and people with disabilities,” said Delana.

“We want to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities so they also have equal rights like everyone else and I think we are moving to that stage slowly.

Meanwhile, FDPF president Rakesh Chand said they would work with the Government in order to bring about equality.

“We will not be like countries overseas and sue the Government if we don’t get our way. We want to work hand in hand with the Government so that we can also make a difference.”
