Water cuts will soon be a thing of the past for residents of Delainavesi, Lami and Veisari near Suva.

The Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Pio Tikoduadua, yesterday ordered the Water Authority of Fiji to procure four new water pumps.

The pumps will end the water crisis that has afflicted the residents over the years.

Mr Tikoduadua, mindful of the residents’ suffering, has made a commitment  to fix their water woes as his first priority before he moves to other areas.

“I’m hoping to acquire the system and I have already directed the authority to acquire the system that will secure four more pumps,” he said.

“ I think they have already done the tenders; they have to find the money and do the job,” Mr Tikoduadua said.

He said the ministry was also looking at providing better, reliable and adequate water supply to rural areas.

Mr Tikoduadua also confirmed plans for a department that would synergise planning by officials from the energy, water and roads departments.

This, he said, would  help them assess operations on the ground in their various departments.

Mr Tikoduadua said there were indications that the dry spell in the country was not deteriorating.

This, he said, was because there had been light rain around the country which he hoped would continue to help alleviate the water crisis.

He added that officials from the Ministry of Rural Maritime Development and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport were conducting assessments around the country and would brief the Prime Minister on the contingency plans they had in place.
