The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) is excited about a new cane belt area with optimal production potential.
It now plans to set up a new  sugarcane nursery at Dama, on the upper reaches of the Wainibuka River, in the province of Ra.
The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Sugar, Manasa Vaniqi confirmed this to the Fiji Sun yesterday.
He said he had visited the place on Wednesday and the cane farmers agreed on the need to start a new nursery in the area.
Mr Vaniqi said the sugar cane belt area was very productive.
Five brothers, according to Mr Vaniqi, had cane farms at Dama and were producing 3000 – 4000 tonnes of cane in a crushing season.
He said the brothers told him that Dama has the right climate for cane.
“They suggested that the FSC must have a cane nursery in Dama and I totally agree with them,” Mr Vanqi said.
He said Suva lawyer Timoci Naco (Junior) also had a sugar cane farm in the area.
Mr Vaniqi said the contractors had started work on the cane access roads to the area and were also piling gravel in the river for cane trucks to cross to the cane fields.
“We’re looking at erecting an Irish crossing there.”
