Union Polls Next for FEO

Trade union elections supervised by Fijian Elections Office will go ahead despite protests from unions.
Supervisor of Elections  Moh-ammed Saneem said they were waiting for a gazette before preparing for trade union and municipal elections.
“We are currently working with the Registrar of Trade Unions and the Minister Responsible for Elections (Attorney-General Faiyaz Koya).
“Announcements will be made once arrangements are finalised,” Mr Saneem said.
This is the first time that union elections will be supervised by an independent outside organisation. But the practice is not new in some countries.
Previously, Fijian unions conducted their own elections, and there have been complaints of vote  rigging and manipulation.
The conduct of the elections by an independent group is designed to make them transparent and credible. It will also minimise irregularities.
Union officials have complained that the new rule is another attempt to restrict their rights and control them.
