Members of the Fiji Volunteer Service who attended a three-week training with the Ministry of Education’s National Substance Abuse Advisory Council (NSAAC) that ended on Thursday were reminded to perform their jobs well.
The workshop at Nadave, Tailevu, aimed to strengthen their knowledge and develop the necessary skills of the 10 volunteers who would assist the NSAAC staff.
The participants were trained in various fields like basic first aid instructions, human trafficking and sexual assault, cyber crime, family planning, etc.
The Permanent Secretary of the Public Service Commission, Parmesh Chand, who closed the training, said he hoped the workshop and the experience gained would provide a personal and professional development in the participants.
“The results you will see from this project will be tangible and invaluable in the lives of those you help. It is our hope that with your continued commitment and drive the citizens of Fiji will be better informed of the dangers these social issues present,” Mr Chand said.
He said the training served as an excellent flagship project for the Ministry of Education and PSC and that the PSC was willing to provide many more teachers.
“You are the initial testing lot in regards to this project. We would like to hear from you on how best we can further equip our resources that will enable you to do your jobs to the best of your abilities,” Mr Chand said.
He said it was a new area and their intention was to reach out to rural communities through district education and administrative officers because they remain an untapped resource in counselling and advice.
