What happened: The Apimeleki Vunisa-captained Ba Veterans was crowned the new winner of the 2014 RC Manubhai/APCO International Veterans tournament at the Prince Charles Park in Nadi yesterday.

Laced with district reps like Jope Lomu, Lario Musa, and Viliame Batidegei they defeated NZ Lautoka Masters 4-3 in penalty shootout after both teams were locked 0-0 in extra time.

They won $4000 while the Blues, who had the services of Waisale Rasoki, Joji Rasiga, Netani Moce and Albert Lal, received $2000.

In the last few minutes of the second-half NZ Lautoka Masters was handed a penalty after Ba defender had a hand ball in the box.

Blues skipper Rasila’s spotkick was denied after his shot hit the cross bar.

Meanwhile, Ba Veterans was fresh from bundling defending champion Suva Masters out in the semifinal 2-0 with goals from Narendra Muni Sami.

In the other semifinal, Nadroga Veterans lost to NZ Lautoka Masters 4 – 1 with Rasoki scoring twice.

Star turn: Ba veteran goalkeeper Filive Tuilawalawa for saving Shalend Singh’s penalty shot.

Big play: Waisale Rasoki and Jope Lomu stood out.

Comments: Ba Veterans captain Apimeleki Vunisa said, “We are happy with the win as our opponents  gave us a hard match but I thank the boys for their effort this weekend.”

NZ Lautoka Masters president Albert Lal said, “We had the chance but could nail the penalty. We are  disappointed but happy to reach to reach the final.”
