Rain Brings Great Relief

Some livestock farmers in Labasa were relieved when it rained throughout the day yesterday.

Goat herder Hirdesh Prasad of Wailevu said he was hoping for more rain to help him with his farm and water for his goat herd.

The 18-year-old has been struggling for weeks trying to keep his farm and nourishing his goat herd.

“During this dry spell, the major concern was looking for green pasture for my animals but the rain today (yesterday) has brought a glimpse of hope to me,” Mr Prasad said.

“It wasn’t heavy but just enough to give some relief from the dry weather we’ve suffered for some time. It was a big relief when the rain came and now we are hoping for more.”

Another farmer, Nilesh Chand, who lives along Tabia Road shared similar sentiments.

“We have to look for water to feed our animals but because of the rainfall yesterday, I was really happy,” Mr Chand said.

Meanwhile, principal agriculture officer-North has advised farmers to destock because of the dry spell being faced in our country.

“Also farmers are been advised to cart water and for people living near the creek to use water wisely.”

The Meteorological Office in Nadi has forecast afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms for Labasa.
