The Nasoni Roko-captained Vodafone Fiji 7s team returned yesterday after winning the Oceania Sevens Championship in Noosa, Australia last Saturday.

The Serea, Naitasiri native has called on the players to step up another notch and aim to be part of the core team for the 2014/2015 HSBC Sevens World  Series.

“We proved our critics wrong; we went there and played out hearts out,” Roko said.

He said the four debutants Jerry Tuwai, Anare Saurara, Eremasi Radrodro and Jone Qoro played well.

“It was good exposure for the new reps and they blended well with the experienced players.

“We’ve even proved with this mix of players here under the coaching of Ben (Ryan); we did the job.”

Roko has reiterated to the rest of the players to do the hard yards to be part of the core team for the remainder of the season.

“I guess the onus is on us; we just have to justify ourselves. We have to work hard and it will pay out in due time.” Ryan was impressed with the whole team and credited them all for a true team effort.

“All the team played well and I won’t be highlighting one player. They all got positive reports from me.”

Ryan added the focus going into this weekend’s Gold Coast Sevens was to be ready from the get-go.

“We going into the weekend to make sure they are full of energy and ready to give their best shot from the moment the whistle blow in the first game against Scotland on Saturday.”

Fiji plays Scotland at 12.02 pm, Portugal at 3.2pm and Australia at 7.10pm.
