What happened: Lautoka walloped Rewa 4-1 to keep their chances alive of making the semifinal of the 2014 Courts Inter-District Championship.

The teams were evenly matched as Garish Prasad delivered a few good corners 20 minutes into the game. Lautoka managed to break the Rewa defence a few times when Archie Underwood dribbled past defenders to reach just outside the box but there was no support to back up the perfect play which could have resulted in a goal.

The Blues persistence paid off when Peni Finau drew first blood with a well placed kick, 1-0.

Nine minutes later, Finau hit another goal bringing Lautoka to the lead in the 29th minute, 2-0.

Because of the rain, it was difficult keeping possession of the ball as Rewa found that out the hard way but that did not stop them from scoring before halftime with a goal from Finau’s fellow Wailotua, Wainbuka native Savenaca Nakalevu.

Halftime: Lautoka 2-1 Rewa

Both teams looked exhausted from the wet underfoot. Rewa’s Lorima Dau had an opportunity to equalise from a shot at goal outside the box but the ball bounced off the cross bar.

In the 68th minute, Lautoka bagged their third goal in style when Rusiate Matarerega beat the Rewa defenders for the third goal. Rewa’s discipline in the game caused a setback as two yellow cards were produced with third being a red for Nakalevu reducing the team to 10 men. Lautoka made use of this opportunity resulting Arvindra Naidu scoring in the 87th minute.

Star turn: Peni Finau was an outstanding player and boosted the Lautoka team’s morale after scoring a double.

Big play:

Lautoka’s goalkeeper Levi Tawake displayed an outstanding performance.

Comments:

Rewa coach Marika Rodu, “We are not out of it yet, we were caught off-guard in our defence and gave away two silly goals.

“We still have a game left to play and we need to go back to the drawing board and plan our approach properly for our game against Ba.”

Lautoka coach Lambert Sanju, “We went in with a game plan and we stuck to it. We know we needed to slow them down in the second-half and that’s exactly what we did. But this is done and we now look forward to our next game.”
