This has been a great week. It will go down in the annals of our young democracy as the start of a new journey.

On Monday, our 50 MPs were sworn in by the Secretary-General to Parliament, Viniana Namosimalua. Our first woman Speaker, Dr Jiko Luveni was elected unopposed. She was followed by SODELPA leader Ro Teimumu Kepa who was also elected unopposed as the first female Opposition Leader.

The elevation of women to high-profile positions is welcomed. It is in harmony with the provision of the Constitution on equality.

On Tuesday, President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau rolled out Government’s plan for the next four years when he officially opened Parliament.

On Thursday, Fiji Day celebrations kicked off in earnest and it coincided with Teachers Day celebrations in schools.

Yesterday, thousands of people, young and old and of different backgrounds attended Fiji Day celebrations throughout the country.

The turnout was the best in the past eight years and it reflected the positive mood of the people. It was a day when they commemorated 44 years of independence and the first week of our journey as a young true democracy.

This week will be capped off nicely if coach Ben Ryan and his players lift the title of the IRB World Series opener at the Gold Coast.

It will be icing on the cake for an awesome week.
