Hundreds gathered to cheer on their workmates, family members and friends competing in the 30th Bilibili Race in Sigatoka, yesterday.

The event, which was celebrated together with Fiji Day, had various hotels and resorts in various competitions provided.

Fiji Hotels and Tourism Industry president, Dixon Seeto said the event had several significances for Fiji.

“Apart from the contribution the tourism industry has had on Fiji, there is a need to acknowledge the contribution of the staff of various hotels and resorts who work tirelessly and give great service and make Fiji one of the most attractive destinations in the world,” he said.

He said it was also a special celebration together with the newly elected parliament.

“It is an important day as we also welcome the new era as democracy with parliament being sworn in this week and the fact that Fiji is celebrating its 44 years of independence,” Mr Seeto said.

He said they looked forward to Government’s assistance and support for the industry.

Mr Seeto, who was also the chief guest at the event, thanked the competition committee making the day successful.

“I would like to thank the committee for the hard work and especially to the founder of this competition, Bob Kennedy who was very instrumental through the years,” he said.

Mr Kennedy said all that mattered was for people to have fun and enjoy themselves.

“At the end of the day all that matters is that workers enjoy themselves with their families and friends,” he said.

He encouraged all participants to be confident and work towards their goal.

“This competition helps people to build more confidence in socialising and I encourage everyone, if they have a goal they should work towards it,” he said.
