Anthony Navolo, 17, took out the first leg of the 2014 Tour of Fiji by a whisker ahead of Australian Shane Miller yesterday.

Riding his new Merida bike, he managed to break away from the pack at Yako Village all the way to the finish line at Korotogo, Sigatoka. Australia Steven Lane came in third.  Anthony’s dad Percy, a former national cycling rep, was emotional with his son performance.

Fiji Cycling Association president Adrienne Ali was happy with the turnout with 47 cyclist taking part.

“This comprised 27 locals, four from Australia, and 16 expats,” said Ali.

She said the six-time Australia Master’s time trial champion Shane Miller has boosted the event this year.

“We are lucky to have someone like Shane competing with us.”

“We aim to donate 25 bikes to schools to form cycling teams later in the year.

“Fulton Hogan is among our major sponsors so they will ensure the roads are in perfect condition.”

Also competing was FAST club of Namaka featuring national triathlon reps Nau Dakuliga and Lavinia Dickinson.

The Tour of Fiji starts in Nadi and will end in Novotel Suva Lami Bay tomorrow and will be followed by a victory lap to Albert Park, Suva.
