Queen Victoria School headboy, Cory Grenier, is happy to call himself a Victorian.

Speaking to Fiji Sun at the QVS Chapel’s Golden Jubilee celebration at the school yesterday, Mr Grenier said he was glad to be at the school. His father is from America and mother from Qamea.

“I’m really pleased to be here at QVS and I’ll treasure every moment at the school,” Mr Grenier said.

He said he was lucky to be the head boy of the school when they celebrated the Chapel’s golden jubilee.

The jubilee he said had brought together the QVS family and the students were really blessed to mingle with some well-known people of Fiji who were former scholars.

Speaking on their preparation for the celebration he said, it was really moved by the old scholars and they had prepared for it well. For his future, he said he would like to be a doctor.

As for the chapel it was in 1958 that the then head boy Ratu Jone Vuiyasawa asked the principal, Arthur Hurrel why they could not have a chapel of their own.

At the time they held church services in the school library. Work on the new chapel started in 1958 and it was completed in 1964.

When it was dedicated , the then president of the newly-independent Methodist Church of Fiji Conference, the late Reverend Setareki Tuilovoni, wrote in his congratulatory message: “The availability of a chapel for worship and other religious activities in a Government school is new in this colony and worthy of commendations.”

Other Government schools like Adi Cakobau and Ratu Kadavulevu School had since taken on board the commendation of the late Rev Tuilovoni and have folllowed suit in building and dedicating their own chapels.
