About 145 senior citizens from five special homes were part of the Fiji Day celebration in Suva last Friday.

It included senior citizens from the Father Law Home, Saint Vincent DePaul, Samabula Senior Citizens Home, Sisters of Our Lady of Nazareth and that of the Banaban Elderly Group.

As part of Government’s vision on building an inclusive society for senior citizens, the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation made arrangements for these senior citizens to join the Fiji Day festivity and were treated to free lunch and tea.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar said the Ministry would persevere to build an empowering and inclusive society for the senior citizens in Fiji.

“Fiji is home to all Fijians, and we all need to appreciate and take pride to recognise the contributions of our senior citizens in building Fiji to what we enjoy today,” Ms Akbar said.

“As part of Government’s efforts the National Council of Older Persons since its establishment in 2013, continues to strengthen the existing mechanisms to progressively implement the key actions as per Fiji’s National Ageing Policy 2011,” Mrs Akbar said.

Speaking on behalf of the senior citizens from the Samabula Senior Citizens, Neelam Kumar acknowledged Ministry for its assistance.

She has been registered nurse at the institution for the last 3 years.

“Through the Ministry’s assistance, we were able to get 16 of our senior citizens to witness the Fiji Day celebrations. We thank the Ministry for showing this kind gesture to the senior citizens and this is a wonderful way to ensure them that they are appreciated,” Ms Kumar said.
