Clad in their best looking saree, 14 women and girls walked down a makeshift stage vying for the MHCC Saree Queen and Choli Princess Competition held at MHCC foyer yesterday.

The competition was part of the MH’s annual promotion for the traditional Hindu celebration of Diwali observed by around the world. Hundreds gathered at the usually crowded area of the MHCC to witness just what the competitors and organisors had instore

For winner of the Saree Queen category, 14-year-old Divyanka Lal, receiving the winning prize of $500 MH Gift Voucher couldn’t have come at a better time.

Shopping galore

A time where all the hype and buzz of shopping for the Diwali celebration which falls on October 23 is something the Form 3 student of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School is surely looking to.

“I’m going to use the money for shopping,” a teary and joyful Ms Lal said.

“Thanks to MHCC we’re able not only win good prizes but it gives us a chance to be proud of our tradition and culture.”

Pretty Praiddhi

Seven-year-old Praiddhi Darpana looked the part of a winning Choli Princess when she strut her looks, hairstyle, dress, and walk wearing a beautiful white saree.

Her dad, Krishan Acharya said the class two student of Dr Ram Lakhan Memorial Primary School was confident about and deserved the $250 MH Gift voucher.

“My younger brother bought her saree from India and she couldn’t wait to wear it for Diwali. When she was given the opportunity to wear for the competition she said ‘I will wear it today and during Diwali’,” Mr Acharya said.

The competition began in September and sponsored by Colgate Optic White, Carpenters (Fiji) Limited and MH Supermarket.

– Third Prize $200 MH Gift Voucher- Artika Prasad

Choli Princess

– Winner $250 MH Gift Voucher- Praiddhi Darpana

– Third Prize $100 Gift Voucher- Shnaya Prathna
