The Fiji Red Cross Society opened its 1st National Youth Summit at the Southern Cross Hotel in Suva last Friday.

With the theme, “Fiji’s Young Humanitarians for Action”, the summit noted that 70 per cent of the society’s volunteer base was made up of young people.

The society recognises youth as important to the organisation; their contribution and in particular their spirit of volunteerism.

This summit will build upon the Youth Officers Forum and the leadership training that was held in May, 2014.

The process is part of building and strengthening the youth component and development within the society that will build and enhance the capacity of youths at every level of the organisation to be effective leaders, volunteers and beneficiaries.

Speakers include representatives from the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, Pacific Survival Network, and Foundation of the Peoples South Pacific International, Ministry of Health and Fiji Police Force.

The summit will enhance and build on the skills of the 77 youth volunteers to be effective humanitarians and agents of change.

It would help them understand global, regional and national humanitarian issues addressed by the society and the movement, create effective peer to peer networking amongst youth volunteers in all Fiji Red Cross branches and the opportunity for peer exchange, leadership development and sharing.
