Diwali is the festival of lights and the glow of the earthen diyas (lamp) spreads the light of harmony, festivity and celebration, says Hare Krishna Society outreach programmer Dr Rajesh Maharaj.

“The time of Diwali is one of the most festive and beautiful times of the year because it is a time filled with light, love and a time when people from all walks of life rejoice,” Dr Maharaj said.

He said they had finished with the Pre-Diwali celebration over the weekend at Syria Park in Nausori and now look forward to celebrating Diwali at home.

“Diwali, the Festival of Lights is a time to celebrate goodwill and prosperity and it is interesting to see how people get busy with arrangements for the beautiful event.”

Dr Maharaj said this was a time when people cleaned their houses and donate things they do not require.

“Diwali is the time when we gather with our loved ones, celebrate it with our family, our friends and the prosperity that God has bestowed upon us.”

He said the Festival of the Lights dispelled the darkness of their ignorance which showed them the way on their journey through life.

Diwali will be celebrated on October 23.
