The Fiji Textile, Clothing and Footwear Industry Council warned that the shortage in machinists could prompt delays in the industry as performance expects to normalise following the initial challenges of the COVID-19 crisis.

The Fiji National University rugby league team received a generous boost from the Australian University Rugby League ahead of their match at the ANZ Stadium.

The FNU team received 20 new sets of jerseys, shorts and socks from representatives of their Australian counterparts who are currently in Fiji on tour to help develop the sport locally.

Tour manager Bob Lennox said he hoped it would serve as a great building block in exposing talents on the road to the 2017 University Rugby League World Cup in Sydney.

“We’ve come here to try and help them get best prepared for the 2017 University World Cup and this is the first step for them,”Lennox said

“We did the same thing with South Africa about four years ago which is just all part of taking a step of development.

“This is the first time for Australian Universities to come to Fiji.

“We’re hoping we’ll be able to have that same effect here.

“If you don’t make it to the 2017 World Cup, we’ll have counted it as a failure on our part because we see it as our responsibility to enable you to achieve that.”

Receiving the jerseys, FNU Sports development advisor Alifereti Cawanibuka acknowledged the assistance.

“We thank AURL and Fiji National Rugby League for the development of the sport as well as assisting in the preparations for this game.

“This game is the building block to our plan to take up a team to the 2017 University Rugby League World Cup.

The AURL team played their first match in the 2014 Fiji test Series against the University of the South Pacific last Thursday, winning 40-0.

They will take on FNURL team at 3.30pm this afternoon at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
