Waisale Serevi applauded the effort put in by Vodafone Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan and his men in winning the Gold Coast Sevens in style last Sunday. Fiji beat Samoa in the Cup final 31-24.

The former national 7s coach/captain praised the solid defence put in by his countrymen.

“”I’m proud as it has been a while,” Serevi said. “I’ve never seen our team tackle defence so well and I hope Ben and his men will continue to keep the momentum.”

He said there were exciting times ahead and the profile of the sport would only get bigger now that it’s an official discipline at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

“I think it’s had an impact as a couple of teams have really stepped up,” Serevi said.

“With New Zealand being so consistent all these years, I don’t remember the last time New Zealand went out in the Cup quarterfinals. It shows that the teams now participating in the HSBC Sevens World Series are taking the only chance to get in the top four and qualify for the Olympics. So it’s getting tougher and it’s exciting.”

Meanwhile, Vodafone Flying Fijians coach John McKee said the win was a reflection of the quality of preparations.

“It was an excellent display and a clear reflection of the good preparations,” he said.

Telecom Fijiana coach Iliesa Tanivula praised Ryan for taking the team to another level.

“Awesome stuff. The boys are really fit and the intensity of the game is just another level. It’s a step up and a really good job done by Ben to lift the team standard. It’s a good start and hopefully they can keep that consistency throughout the season.”

Former national 7s coach Etuate Waqa praised debutants Jerry Tuwai and Savenaca Rawaca for outstanding performances, adding the win had set a good platform.

“I think we’ve set a good platform and it’s all about keeping that consistency. Some of the young players like Tuwai and Rawaca have shown the brilliance that Ben is always talking about and trying to bring to the Fiji team.”

The team are scheduled to arrive at 5.45am today.
