Paralympic high jump gold medallist Iliesa Delana is determined to raise the bar in the political arena.

In his maiden speech in Parliament yesterday, the Assistant Minister for Sports described his new position as a ‘dream job.’

‘’To work for the betterment of young Fijians doing what I love most – being involved with sport. We have great plans in the Ministry to continue the work of the past eight years to improve sporting facilities in the country,’’ he said.

He recounted his personal journey – losing his leg at three years old in a bus accident and then his inspiring journey to Olympic gold.

‘’When you win an Olympic gold medal in your twenties, many people think ‘what on earth can I do to top that’. Well, here I am in the Fijian Parliament as an elected representative of the people and Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports.’’

Mr Delana intends to travel throughout Fiji over the next four years ‘encouraging our people to achieve their personal best.’
