The University of the South Pacific’s vice-chancellor and president, Professor Rajesh Chandra, commended the Ministry of Education for holding an education forum for industry stakeholders and training providers.
Professor Chandra said the forum was for training providers to interact with industry stakeholders on the requirements they wanted from students coming out of training institutions.
“I think the consultation is a very good idea because whatever we are trying to do in education and training need to reflect the requirements of the employers. The trainers and the ministry need to engage with each other so that we have a common understanding of whether the education training being provided is meeting the requirements,” Professor Chandra said.
“My objective was to listen and gain an idea of the requirements of industry stakeholders and make an assessment from the university’s side. The other objective was to inform the stakeholders about our approach to certain things so that the industry understands why some of the programmes are taught in a deliberate way.”
Professor Chandra said as the vice-chancellor, he wanted the university to be responsive and make sure that the training it provided met the requirements of the industry.
