Attorney-General and Minister for Finance, Public Service and Communications, Aiyaz Sayed – Khaiyum, urged the organisers of the Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America (FANCA) tournament to have its 20th anniversary in Fiji.

Speaking at the launch dinner at the FMF Gymnasium last night Sayed-Khaiyum said the Fijian Government would be prepared to host visitors for the anniversary.

“Fiji obviously is a common factor with everybody in this room and as I said in 2012 the significance of Fiji should not be lost in any one of us,” Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“It is critically important for the first time that when we do this get together every two years that, that get together is held in Fiji that is what binds us.”

The 20th anniversary is going to be in 2017 and the 2016 tournament would be moved forward to 2017.

“I would urge the officials and the office bearers in various associations representing Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji to please think about, resolve about having the 20th anniversary celebrated in style in the country that has actually given birth to FANCA.

“It is obviously without Fiji you would not have a FANCA. So I urge you to think about considering that. Fiji government we have been very supportive about the Fijians coming back home or those Fijians who have connections with Fiji to come back home we are here to facilitate them to make it easier for you,” he said.

The Minister wished all the teams well in the three-day tournament.

The tournament starts today at Ratu Cakobau Park and will be opened by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.
