Fijian soldiers serving with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) have been reminded by   Lieutenant-Colonel Vatimio Leva, UNDOF’s chief military personnel officer;

“All Fijians in UNDOF must be professional and dedicated peacekeepers in order to achive the UNDOF Mission.”

Lt-Col Leva said during the Fiji Day celebrations they were all diplomats of the soverign nation of Fiji and they must maintain the standard as required by Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga.

During the parade there were four promotions – Captain Savenaca Siwatibau Rabuka was promoted to Major, Captain Isoa Tokalauvere (Navy) was promoted to Major, Lieutenant Taniela Naulivou was promoted to Captain and Lieutenant Selu Qetaki was promoted to Captain.

Major Rabuka was one the 45 Fijian peacekeepers who were released after being detained by the al-Nusra Front rebel group.

In remembrance of Fiji’s one-year tenure in the Golan Heights at Camp Ziouani, an olive tree was planted by Lt-Col Leva, Reverend Waisale Tikowale Vuli and the youngest serving soldier, Privete Semi Radrodro.

Also on Fiji Day, the Bula Bar was opened by Commanding Officer Lt-Col Isoa Loanakadavu. At lunch, the Fiji Day cake was cut by Deputy Force Commander, Brigadier General Tony Hanlon, Lt-Col Leva and Pte Radrodro inside the mess.

A lovo was prepared and all UNDOF and civilian staff enjoyed the lunch hosted by the Fijian Troops. The Fiji Day church service was at Koronikalou Methodist Church at Camp Ziuoani.

A park close to the church was named Koronikalou Park to honour Lt-Col Leva’s leadersdhip.

He hails from Cautata, Tailevu.
