Labasa Market vendors yesterday commended the acknowledgement and attention given to them and their line of work by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar.

The vendors thanked Ms Akbar who attended the celebration of International Rural Women’s Day at the Labasa Civic Centre yesterday.

“Markets are the major source of quality, affordable, fresh and nutritious local food for urban residents. Women rural vendors play a very crucial role in this,” Ms Akbar said.

“Labasa Market is the largest fresh produce market in Vanua Levu where most produce are locally grown.”

Ms Akbar said apart from 500 vendors, 180 were male and 320 were female vendors.

Majority of the rural women vendors travel from as  far as Nabouwalu and Saqani to sell their produce there.

“Our Government is committed to seeing a friendlier and better business environment to benefit your business and that of your family too.

“I congratulate Labasa Market vendors for their hard work and the patience that they endure on a daily basis,” she said.
