Please! No Liquor, Meat In Diwali Cocktails: VHP

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (Fiji) is calling on corporate houses to refrain from serving liquor and meat during Diwali cocktails.
The organisation’s national president, Jay Dayal, said Diwali should be celebrated with an authentic spirit and a culturally appropriate way.
“The pious spirit of Diwali is honoured in a tobacco free and alcohol free environment where only vegetarian food (no poultry, fish or meat of any kind) is served.
“The Hindus in Fiji have raised concerns and are disappointed that certain corporate organisations over the years have continued to offend us by hosting annual Diwali cocktails where, in spite of objections, even by their own employees, such practices seem to have become a norm.”
The organisation has requested everyone celebrating, to celebrate in a culturally appropriate manner.
They should have respect and dignity for the festival and the essence of the festival without the use of meat and liquor under the banner of Diwali.
“We strongly urge corporate bodies to at least respect Hindu culture and tradition that has a foundation in time- tested methods of a balanced and harmonious living, and not only in mere faith.
“In New Zealand, the Human Rights Commission of New Zealand has endorsed a guide to celebrate Deepawali in the authentic way.
“VHP Fiji has studied this guide and endorses that the guide is in line with cultural Hindu practices,” Mr Dayal said.
