Fiji Police Force Director Internal Affairs, Senior Superintendent of Police Luke Navela, has been appointed to investigate some of the outstanding issues raised by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on Vilikesa Soko who died in Police custody earlier this year.

This was confirmed by Police Commissioner Bernardus Groenewald yesterday.

“I have appointed a senior investigating officer to investigate the case and since it is from the West, the senior officer will be travelling to the West to carry out the investigation,” Commissioner Groenewald said.

“I have not given him any timeline to complete the investigation because I want him to look at every outstanding issues raised by DPP to be investigated.”

These issues were raised after the DPP’s office completed a preliminary review of the death before returning the file to Police last week.

Commissioner Groenewald confirmed that investigations will continue into an official complaint by former school teacher, Joseva Bilitaki against some police officers who were involved in his arrest.

The Police Commissioner said he met the investigating officer yesterday and investigations were into their final stages. Commissioner Groenewald said they hoped to submit the file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions next week.

Bilitaki was arrested by a Police task team and detained at the Totogo Police Station for the alleged offence of annoyance in contravention to Section 376 of the Crimes Decree.
