The President and University of Fiji’s  chancellor, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, said the $2.5 million building to be constructed at the University’s Suva Campus was in line with Government’s vision of Fiji being a knowledge-based society.

Ratu Epeli made this comment while officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony at the campus yesterday.

“This is no mini achievement for a young, developing and vibrant university. This expansion will add value to Government’s vision of making Fiji a knowledge-based society,” Ratu Epeli said.

“This added development and expansion work will also contribute to the aim of making Fiji the hub of higher education in the South Pacific.

“Today’s groundbreaking ceremony marks the intention of the UniFiji council to construct the new building structure at a cost of $2.5m to provide added space of teaching other courses at the Suva Campus.

“As more opportunities would be made available in 2015, more students will be able to enrol and study programmes of their choice and seek Government’s assistance through the TOPPERS Scheme and Tertiary Loan and Scholarship Board.”

Ratu Epeli said the university had been working closely with the Fiji Higher Education Commission in seeking that its programmes and qualifications were accredited and added to the Fiji Qualifications Framework.

The building is expected to be completed by early next year.
