Opposition parliamentarian Niko Nawaikula is willing to meet the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to discuss his controversial comments in Parliament this week about ‘another coup.’

However, Mr Nawaikula of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) justified his words and accused the Fiji Sun of sensationalising his comments on yesterday’s front page.

The Prime Minister had replied strongly to Mr Nawaikula’s talking of another coup in Fiji, should certain constitutional conditions not be met.

He criticised Mr Nawaikula and said security forces would be taking all necessary measures to ensure no other coup happened in Fiji.

“I fear now for my safety,” Mr Nawaikula claimed, at a press conference yesterday.

“Personally that has created for me the fear for my safety. I take it as a restriction on my personal liberty and freedom, my right and freedom of speech,” he said.

“The Honourable Prime Minister must understand that he is now a Prime Minister, he must exercise his powers with humility, respect and accountability and that includes allowing others to freely express their view and he must protect their right to do so.”

Mr Nawaikula denied threatening to organise a coup during the delivery of his maiden speech on Thursday.
