Lands Hears Public Opinion

Landowners and the general public last Friday received first-hand information from the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources during a public consultation in Sigatoka.

The consultation is one of five that will be held around the country to hear public views on how the ministry could improve its services.

The first session was held at the Sai Hall in Sigatoka where the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Mere Vuniwaqa, highlighted that the ministry was trying to addresses issues pertaining to land and its use.

“We want to solve these issues so that we are able to create a close working group with landowners and the ministry so there is a better service and faster turnaround time,” Mrs Vuniwaqa said.

“We understand that you (public) are facing problems in paying your rental fees for State or Crown Land while the ministry has noticed that the people owe money in rental arrears.”

Under her leadership, she said the ministry would continue to strive to ensure that land rents were paid on time and also assist tenants should they face problems.

She reiterated that iTaukei land was more secure now than ever before as stipulated in the 2013 Constitution.

The Permanent Secretary for Lands, Tevita Boseiwaqa, said the ministry recognised Fiji’s untapped mineral resources and was in consultation with landowners on how to best use resources like water and other minerals.

“Fiji Water is a very good example of sustainable developments and we are already seeing the benefits to the landowners and other nearby areas that have benefited through the water bottling company. There is another company also in Nananu in Tailevu which is also promising,” Mr Bosewaqa said.
