Ovalau Wins Melbourne 7s

One weekend on from the Vodafone Fiji 7s side’s dazzling victory at the 2014 Gold Coast Sevens, another home-grown side reigned supreme on Australian soil.

Ovalau made waves after being crowned the 2014 Melbourne International 7s winners following the final last Saturday.

The Lomaiviti team defeated fellow Fijian side Red Rock 22-14 in the final at AAMI Park to lift the prestigious Tanoa trophy and also pocketed $10,000.

In the Plate final, Waikato Fijians of New Zealand took home the silverware after thumping Southern Districts 40-17 while Endeavour Hills narrowly edged Melbourne Raka 26-24 to keep the Bowl in the host city. The event was also graced by All Blacks 7s captain DJ Forbes and teammate Tomasi Cama Junior who served as the tournament’s official ambassadors.

Sixteen teams competed in the two-day meet in Melbourne which was held in conjunction with a Pacific Islands Cultural Expo featuring performances from Fiji, Rotuma, Samoa, Tonga and Hawaii.

The event ended with the highly anticipated 2014 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship match with Melbourne Rising winning over Queensland Country 47-26.
