A big number of Catholics at the St Joseph the Worker Parish in Tamavua, Suva, happily committed their lives to Christ during the Sacrament of confirmation Mass yesterday.

The Mass was graced by the Head of the Catholic Archdiocese of Suva, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong.

The Sacrament of Confirmation completes the Sacrament of Baptism. If baptism is the sacrament of re-birth to a new and supernatural life, confirmation is the sacrament of maturity and coming of age.

Newly-confirmed member Apao Erasito said the Mass yesterday marked a special day for him and his other confirmed members.

“It marks the end of our 15 weeks of preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation but begin in our life the firm relationship with Christ and full participation in the sacramental life,” Mr Erasito said.

The 28-year-old said they’ve encountered the many obstacles during their journey and had made decisions at crossroads.

“We have learned to love, to be gentle and humble through the Holy Spirit and have made the fundamental decision to follow Jesus Christ,” Mr Erasito said.

Symone Mar, 13, said she felt like a totally different person.

“It feels good now that I have become a soldier of Christ,” the teenager said.

Many of those who were confirmed yesterday were in their teens. Archbishop Chong, in his sermon, told the newly-confirmed members to carry on the mission into society.

“They are sent forth on a mission not only in the church but also in society, that they have to live out their faith in the wider society,” Archbishop Chong said.
