First Of Two Wash-up Payments Today

Cane growers will receive the first of the two final wash-up cane payments of $3 per tonne today.

The remaining payout of $3.37 per tonne is scheduled to be paid by October 31.

This is after the final wash-up cane payment of $6.37 per tonne from the 2013 season proceeds was recently announced.

This is a milestone achievement for our sugar industry’s history of $88.49 per tonne payout equating to a total share of growers proceeds standing at $142,504.909.

Sugar Cane Growers Council chief executive, Sundresh Chetty, said the payments from the 2013 season proceeds has created history.

“This is the biggest payout in the 132 years history of our sugar industry and we thank the Government for the effective reforms,” Mr Chetty said.

“Under the leadership of the Bainimarama Government, our sugar industry over the years has noticed significant improvements and continues to strive for the best.”

He said this is because of the efficiency of the four respective mills has been on par and the quality of sugarcane harvested.

Mr Chetty believes the final wash-up cane payment figure of $88.49 could increase in the coming years.

“For the 2012 season, the industry recorded a payout of $81.82 per tonne but this payout is an increase of $6.67 per tonne.
