Giving Back To Fiji For 25 Years

Students of Hilton Special School in Suva were all smiles yesterday after they were given a pre-Diwali treat of free ice cream by Rocky Buksh, a Fijian now living in the United States.
Mr Buksh does this every year he has visited Fiji.
“I left Fiji in 1978 for San Fransisco. This is what I do when I return. I go to villages and buy food for the people. I don’t want to know whether they can afford it or not, but this is what me and my mum have been doing for the last 25 years in Fiji,” Mr Buksh said.
He said it was important for every Fijian overseas to come back and give back to the country.
“I think all religions say you should share what you have; I don’t give it to other countries because I have to share it with my people first. So I come to my home country to do this; I don’t go to other countries like Mexico and India but I have to feed my people and my children first so this is what I have been doing,” he said.
Mr Buksh said he only wished he could do this every day; people in the US seemed to take everything for granted because it was a rich country.
“It hurts me inside to see and think about what I have and what they don’t have; what is in America and what is here. So many things are wasted in that country because it is a very rich and well developed country but when I come to Fiji and see how people live and the system here makes me feel really bad because I grew up like them. Our children come here and they say they are so fortunate they were born in Canada and America.”
Hilton school teacher Mesake Baulo said the students were always looking forward to receiving visitors at the school.
Mr Baulo thanked Mr Buksh for having a heart to think and give back to the students and said these good deeds should be a challenge to every other Fijian living overseas.
Meanwhile, Mr Buksh plans to visit the school again in February next year.
