Ministry Focus: Looking After Kids In Homes

The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation says it is focused on ensuring quality care for all the children especially those who are looked after at the residential homes.

Permanent Secretary Dr Josefa Koroivueta said the renaming of the ministry as, ‘Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation’, reinforced the commitment of the Fijian government towards the development of children in Fiji. Children replaced Social Welfare.

“Through Cabinet approval the monthly allowances allocation for children in residential homes, as of last year has increased from $60 to $100 per month per child.

“This is called the Care and Protection Allowances (C&P) and the total C&P allowances currently paid to the residential homes from January to August 2014 amounts to $104,670,” Dr Koroivueta said.

“Apart from monthly allowances, the ministry also provides funding to residential homes through its budget allocation to non-government organisations (NGOs) Grants.

“These grants are given annually in accordance to the submissions made by the Homes; it is particularly provided for an effective administration and operation of residential homes. The financial support is also given towards infrastructure development as all the homes are mandated to comply with certain standards.

“The approved NGO Grants for Residential Homes (Dilkusha, St. Christopher’s, Treasure, St. Minas, Veilomani, Lomani Au) amounts to $75,000 for this year,” he said.

There are currently 158 children who are under State care and are looked after at the nine residential homes in Fiji.
