The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation will be lighting up the lives of disadvantaged children and senior citizens by distributing Diwali gift packs to them.

Yesterday 245 gifts packs were donated to the ministry by Punja and Sons Limited as part of its social corporate responsibility.

The ministry would be visiting the disadvantaged homes this week to distribute the gifts.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar said everyone knew that Diwali was celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil.

“Diwali is also a time to enjoy sweets, lights and bright lamps and having sparkling celebrations,” Ms Akbar said.

“As we near Diwali celebration this year, my ministry plans to make this Diwali a memorable one by visiting the children and the senior citizens in all our residential homes in Suva and around the country.”

She said the visit during Diwali for those under their care was to show that they had family.

The ministry has been committed to providing an enabling environment for older persons as per Fiji’s National Ageing Policy of 2011-2015.

“The overall goal of policy is to promote the wellbeing of older persons with the opportunities to be integrated into the mainstream society.”

In order to assist the welfare of the senior citizens, the ministry had given a grant of $110,000 to some of the institutions like Pearce Home, Saint Vincent De Paul, Samabula Senior Citizens Home, Home of Compassion, Sisters of Our Lady of Nazareth, Father Law Home and others.

Punja and Sons Limited Group marketing manager Gopal Jadhav said this was a perfect opportunity to reach out to the disadvantaged group to help them celebrate Diwali with gift hampers.
